Vision Quests

A Vision Quest is an ancient rite of passage, which finds its expression in many cultures throughout the world. It has been practiced by the native peoples of the Americas for thousands of years and today is practiced by modern seekers of many different spiritual traditions.

This is a time for a person seeking direction in his or her life to withdraw from the routines and pressures of modern living into the solitude and silence of the Wilderness. It is also a symbolic journey into the wilderness of the mind and spirit. Direction usually comes in the form of visions, powerful synchronicities, lucid dreams, spontaneous revelations, and/or magical experiences with the Natural World.

For more than three decades Peter Calhoun has led hundreds of seekers on Vision Quests and other sacred wilderness journeys. In his opinion, it is the single most transformative experience a person can have and he has witnessed numerous lives, including his own, changed as a result. In contrast to workshop "highs" that all too often wear off with the passage of time, the Vision Quest always seems to effect permanent changes in a person's life.

As a right of passage, this ancient practice involves three stages:

  • An initial period of instruction, preparation, and purification through sweat lodges and other sacred ceremonies;
  • A solo period in which one goes to a personal power spot and there remains in meditative silence for several days; and
  • A time in which the group comes back together for sharing and interpreting our experiences.

Peter's Vision Quests are not courses in physical survival, nor do they involve rugged physical demands. Rather, they teach one not only to survive emotionally, mentally, and spiritually in a chaotic world, but also to thrive there.

Peter has held Vision Quests in various natural settings including Canyonlands National Park in Utah and just outside of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. Both of these locations are places of great spiritual power and are ideal locations for any spiritual quest.
